Phase II Trial of Sorafenib for Patients with Metastatic or Recurrent Esophageal and Gastroesophageal Junction Cancer

[Protocol 09-016]

Full Title :
PHASE II TRIAL OF SORAFENIB FOR PATIENTS WITH METASTATIC OR RECURRENT ESOPHAGEAL AND GASTROESOPHAGEAL JUNCTION CANCER
Purpose :

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a drug called sorafenib (Nexavar®) in patients with cancer of the esophagus or the junction (connection) between the esophagus and stomach that has spread at the time of diagnosis or which worsened or returned after conventional therapy.

Sorafenib is approved for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma and liver cancer. Its use for patients with esophageal and gastroesophageal cancers is considered investigational.

This drug works by stopping a signal made by cancer cells, which they need to multiply and grow, and through inhibiting blood supply to cancer cells. Sorafenib is a capsule that is taken by mouth.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have cancer of the esophagus or the junction (connection) between the esophagus and stomach that has spread at the time of diagnosis or which worsened or returned after conventional therapy.
  • At least 3 weeks must have passed since completion of prior therapy and entry into the study, and patients must have recovered from any side effects.
  • Patients must be age 18 or older.

For more information and to inquire about eligibility for this study, please contact Dr. David Ilson at 212-639-8306.
