REACQUISITION OF RAI UPTAKE OF RAI-REFRACTORY METASTATIC THYROID CANCERS BY PRETREATMENT WITH THE SELECTIVE MEK INHIBITOR AZD6244: A PILOT STUDY
Purpose :

Radioactive iodine is the preferred treatment for thyroid cancer. Once thyroid cancer metastasizes, however, the cancer cells often lose their ability to trap radioactive iodine.

The investigational drug AZD6244 may make thyroid cancer cells sensitive to the anticancer effects of radioactive iodine again. The purpose of this study is to determine if AZD6244 can improve radioactive iodine uptake in patients with metastatic thyroid cancer.

Laboratory studies have shown that AZD6244 is especially active in thyroid cancer cells with mutations in the BRAF gene. Researchers will therefore also examine genetic changes in tumor specimens to see if cancer cells with BRAF mutations are more likely to become sensitive to radioactive iodine after treatment with AZD6244.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have metastatic thyroid cancer that has persisted or progressed despite treatment with radioactive iodine.
  • Patients must be age 18 or older.
