A Prospective Analysis of Surgery in Patients Presenting with Stage IV Breast Cancer

[Protocol 09-056]

Full Title :
A PROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF SURGERY IN PATIENTS PRESENTING WITH STAGE IV BREAST CANCER
Purpose :

The purpose of this study is to study patients diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer (cancer which has spread to another part of the body outside the breast). This study is important because in different parts of the country, some patients are being offered surgical treatment for the breast tumor while others are not. Doctors do not yet know for sure if surgery for the breast tumor is helpful in patients with stage IV breast cancer.

Researchers will collect information about each patient and her treatment to learn more about how patients and doctors make treatment decisions. They will also collect blood samples and tissue samples for laboratory studies to learn more about tumors that have spread to other parts of the body.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must have a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of stage IV breast cancer.
  • Patients may have an intact breast tumor or enter the study within 3 months of local breast surgery.
  • Patients must be age 18 or older.

For more information and to inquire about eligibility for this study, please contact Dr. Tari A King at 646-888-5432.
