AAML0431 for the Treatment of Young Down Syndrome Children with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Myelodysplastic Syndrome
[Protocol 09-080]
- Full Title :
- THE TREATMENT OF DOWN SYNDROME CHILDREN WITH ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA (AML) AND MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROME (MDS) UNDER THE AGE OF 4 YEARS (COG-AAML0431)
- Purpose :
Research has shown that children with Down syndrome are more likely to develop acute myeloid leukemia (AML) than children who do not have this genetic disorder. However, they are also known to respond better to chemotherapy than children with AML who do not have Down syndrome.
The purpose of this Children's Oncology Group study is to determine the effects of changing the order and dosing of chemotherapy drugs, including high-dose cytarabine and daunorubicin, in children with Down syndrome under age 4 who have AML or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS, a cancer of the bone marrow which raises the risk of AML). Researchers want to see if the types and severity of side effects associated with treatment can be decreased without reducing the effectiveness of therapy.
- Eligibility :
To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:
- Patients must have Down syndrome and be newly diagnosed with AML or MDS.
- Patients must be under age 4.
- Patients may not have received any prior therapy.
For more information and to inquire about eligibility for this study, please contact Dr. Neerav Shukla at 212-639-5158.
