A Clinical Trial for Patients with Standard Risk B-Precursor Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

STANDARD RISK B-PRECURSOR ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA (COG AALL0331)
Purpose :

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer in which immature, abnormal infection-fighting white blood cells crowd out normal bone marrow cells and spread into the blood stream. These cells, called "blasts," can also spread to the brain, spinal cord, testicles, and other organs. The standard chemotherapy used today does not cure all children with ALL.

The purpose of this Children's Oncology Group study is to compare the effects of four different treatment regimens in children with varying degrees of ALL. In the first part of this study, researchers will collect information on the type of each patient's leukemia. Patients will be then offered the opportunity to participate in the second part of the study, which will compare various combinations of anticancer drugs.

The effectiveness of the standard drug combination will be compared with several investigational combinations. The regimen each patient will receive will be chosen based on their degree of "risk" (low, average, or high risk), a measure of how likely they are to respond to treatment.

Eligibility :

To be eligible for this study, patients must meet several criteria, including but not limited to the following:

  • Patients must be children newly diagnosed with B-precursor ALL.
  • Patients may not have had prior chemotherapy.
  • Patients must be at least 1 year old but less than 10 years of age, and have an initial white blood cell count of less than 50,000/µl.
