For the first three months of the academic year, a core collection of articles that are of general relevance to the practice of Infectious Diseases are provided to new fellows and are discussed with faculty. In addition to this primer on Infectious Diseases, the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at MSKCC offers fellows a venue of weekly and monthly conferences within our institution and the neighboring New York hospitals.
Advanced Topics in Infectious Diseases
This weekly conference (Wednesdays, 12:30-1:30 PM) covers pertinent topics in ID and serves as a core curriculum for ID fellows. These lectures provide a broad and comprehensive review of important issues in the diagnosis and management of Infectious Diseases. Exciting new advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of Infectious Diseases are also covered.
Journal Club
This weekly meeting (Tuesdays, 8:30-9:30 AM), which alternates weekly with New York Hospital-Cornell, is a forum for discussing manuscripts that have been published in the major medical journals. Important papers are summarized by fellows and discussed as a group with the Infectious Diseases faculty.
MSKCC Clinical Infectious Diseases Conference
The Clinical Infectious Diseases Conference at MSKCC is held every Thursday from 1:30-2:30 PM. Infectious Diseases fellows who are on service organize and prepare for the ID Service Conference. Most of the conference is spent discussing 1-2 cases in depth. The cases are chosen in advance after discussion with the attending on service. Pertinent X-rays and important smears or biopsies are presented. After the case is presented, the fellow leads a discussion, based on a review of the pertinent medical literature. In addition, clinical follow-up of interesting and perplexing cases, as well as review of new or medically unstable out-patients is conducted.
Hospital Infection Control Meeting
This monthly meeting (Thursdays 12:30-1:30 PM) is attended by Infectious Diseases Fellows and faculty that are associated with the Infection Control Service at MSKCC. During this meeting, the Director of Infection Control (Kent Sepkowitz, M.D.) and the Infection Control Manager (Janet Eagan, RN, MPH) and associated staff discuss important epidemiological issues at MSKCC. This meeting provides Infectious Diseases Fellows with an opportunity to experience and learn about the principles and practice of Hospital Infection Control.
Research in Progress Conference
The Research in Progress Conference provides fellows and faculty with an opportunity to review their recent research progress in an informal setting. Presentations are made to the faculty, fellows and staff of the Infectious Diseases Service. This meeting is organized by Dr. Michael Glickman.
Combined Clinical Conference with NYP-Cornell
Once monthly (Friday from 12:30-1:30 PM) a combined clinical conference is held with the members of the Infectious Diseases Service at New York Hospital-Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Clinical cases are presented by fellows from the respective programs and are discussed by clinical fellows and faculty from both institutions.
Intercity Rounds
Twice yearly, the MSKCC hosts intercity rounds. These rounds have been ongoing in NYC and the surrounding area for > 30 years and are based at MSKCC. At rounds, 6-8 cases are presented to ID attendings and fellows from throughout the area as CPC's or as "unknowns". Senior fellows are responsible for organizing these rounds and selecting and assigning cases (in collaboration with the attending staff). During rounds, fellows present a case concisely, lead the discussion of the differential diagnosis and then reveal the diagnosis and present a 5 minute review of the pertinent literature. A list of references is provided for attendees at the end of rounds.
MSKCC and the associated Sloan-Kettering Institute are the setting for an extraordinarily wide spectrum of Seminar Series, ranging from Cell Biology and Immunology to Protein Structure and Genomics. MSKCC Infectious Diseases Fellows have the opportunity and are encouraged to attend seminars and presentations by invited speakers, particularly during their research year(s).
