Program Information

The eight-week summer fellowship program offers students who have completed their first or second year of medical school the opportunity to conduct basic laboratory or clinical research mentored by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center faculty sponsors. Students in the program will:

  • Gain clinical or laboratory research experience
  • Interact with world-renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center faculty members
  • Participate in a weekly lecture series
  • Attend a wide variety of institutional lectures, departmental conferences, and meetings
  • Present their summer research to fellowship peers at a seminar-style session moderated by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center faculty members during the final week of the program

Examples of research areas include:

  • Cancer Biomarker Discovery
  • Genomic Analysis of Targeted Cancer Drugs
  • Integrative Medicine: Treatment and Prevention - Outcomes Analysis
  • Genetic Alterations in Treatment-Induced Cancers
  • Predictive Models for Cancer Survival
  • Preclinical Development for DNA Vaccines for Cancer
  • Familial Cancer Registries - Biostatistics and Epidemiology

Medical students who are currently in their first two years of an accredited United States medical school are eligible to apply. Students must have already entered their first year of medical school prior to June 2008 and must not have begun their third year of medical school as of June 2008. Each student receives a $5,500 stipend.

Program Schedule

June 16 - August 8, 2008, or June 23 - August 15, 2008

Students may elect to start on either June 16 or June 23 subject to sponsor approval. These are the only available start dates -- no exceptions can be made. Students are required to be in attendance through the end of the last day of the program.

Accepted students are required to complete the full eight-weeks of the program on site. There are NO exceptions to this requirement. Students unable to make this commitment are asked not to apply.

Application Information

The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Medical Student Summer Fellowship Program is highly competitive. Last year over 350 applications were received for approximately 40 Fellowship positions. Students are strongly urged to submit their application materials as early as possible.

The following items must be received no later than February 8, 2008:

  1. Completed online application
  2. Letter from the Office of the Medical School Dean or Registrar indicating that the applicant is a first or second year student in good standing. Letter should be addressed to:

Accepted students will be notified on a rolling basis beginning March 1 and continuing through March 31.

Please note that housing is not provided by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
