Pediatric Day
Hospital

At Memorial Sloan-Kettering, one of our goals is to avoid extensive hospitalization stays for our patients whenever possible. Approximately 90 percent of therapy administered to treat children and young adults with cancer in the Pediatric Day Hospital is done on an outpatient basis.

When we opened our doors in 1969, the world's first Pediatric Day Hospital was underway. By design, today even more of our treatments are delivered in ambulatory settings, with many of our patients able to return home to his or her family at the end of the day. On last count, we pediatric outpatient visits to the Pediatric Day Hospital totalled approximately 28,000 per year.

Services

Some of the treatments and procedures at the Pediatric Day Hospital include chemotherapy, hydration, antibody administration, transfusions, pre-surgery admission testing and intake on the day of surgery, routine procedures under anesthesia, and services such as patient-education learning sessions, psychosocial programs, and nutritional services. Additionally, complementary Integrative Medicine Service activities, such as yoga, massage therapy, and creative movement classes, are also routinely offered as part of the outpatient Day Hospital program offerings.

Facilities

Welcome Wall

In 2004,the Pediatric Day Hospital relocated to a state-of-the-art facility on the ninth floor of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. With the move came enhancements to our facility. Today, not only does our facility offer the latest in medical technology but it has won multiple national awards for its innovative design.

When you step off the elevator as you enter, you are greeted with our Welcome Wall. By virtue of a continuously running computer program, a colorful loop of welcome messages, special announcements, and artwork appear on the wall. A smaller Touch Screen, located to the right of the Welcome Wall, offers a menu of visitor options, ranging from directions to doctors' offices to a listing of what is being offered for lunch in the cafeteria -- all with a touch of the finger. Touch the screen again and find a listing of area restaurants or information on New York City family attractions, such as directions to Yankee Stadium, the Empire State Building, or the Children's Museum of New York. With another touch, see photos of members of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering family.

Next is the waiting area, which surpasses all other waiting areas in the hospital because it is home to our very own Gallery Wall. The Gallery Wall is comprised of artwork that patients, their siblings, and friends created to make people feel welcome. Working with The Artists at Jerard Studio, in Brooklyn, the kids built massive sculptures and works of art to mount on the wall. Exhibits are changed periodically.

The Pediatric Day Hospital also a separate, private waiting area to meet the needs of patients who are post-transplant.

Recreation Center
The Recreation Center
is the core of our
day hospital
community

The Recreation Center is the core of our Day Hospital community. Staffed by child life specialists and trained volunteers, the center features many activity areas designed with young children in mind. It is home to our in-house television station, where special programming can be viewed on our unique pediatric channel. This closed-circuit television allows patients in the day bed area or the inpatient unit to watch and listen to special performances taking place in the Recreation Center without leaving their beds.

One of the most popular features of the Recreation Center is the kitchen, where brownies and cookies are the favorite things to bake. The skylight and Feature Wall keep the light constantly changing, so no matter where you are in the center, the light touches you.

The Feature Wall is the visual centerpiece of the Pediatric Day Hospital. A glass and tubular steel sculpture wall that wraps around a portion of the Recreation Center, it separates the play space from the central waiting area. Merging art with technology, this palatial, crystal artwork contains over 8,000 pieces of clear and colored glass objects of all shapes and sizes, reflecting incoming light from the skylight above. Patients may sit in customized booths at the base of the wall, where hidden objects can be seen, or interact with the sculpture to light up smiley faces. Sound and motion sensors embedded in the structure are activated by standing on footprint floor tiles, triggering surprising responses at the wave of a hand. Only one interaction can trigger the entire wall's response, that of a bald head.

The Teen Room is exclusively for teens and young adults. No one under 13 is allowed entry. And, by teen majority vote, parents are not allowed to enter either, except by permission on special occasions. Equipped with computers, surround sound, special video games, and a plasma screen TV, this room is a special oasis, where teen can get away from the rest of the Pediatric Day Hospital.

Five full-time teachers, all certified by the New York City Board of Education, make use of a fully equipped classroom for group and individual instruction, and to offer New York State Regents Exams. The classroom is equipped with computers and teleconferencing capabilities, which are available for use by both patients and staff.

A wall full of colorful, changing "portal" lights greets patients as they go into the clinical examination space. The 15 exam rooms in the physician practice suites are designed to accommodate patients and accompanying family members. The initial and ongoing medical assessments are done here by the clinical team caring for your child.

This area also includes a chemotherapy pharmacy and consultation rooms, where patients, parents, and physicians can discuss treatment options.

The pantry in the Pediatric Day Hospital offers beverages, cereal, and sandwiches throughout the day at no cost. Special treats are available on certain days. For patients admitted to the day bed area for extended treatment, a daily room service program includes lunch services.

Located in the pretreatment area are satellite phlebotomy and hematology labs, as well as an IV room for easy access and for brief medicine administrations.

The day bed area is where patients receive extended treatment or undergo observation. The majority of treatment bays are private, with each bed equipped with a flat screen TV, VCR, a DVD/CD player, and Internet access. The skylight above the day bed area lets in plenty of sun, and seating accommodations are nearby for family members and patients. The Integrative Medicine Service offers bedside massage therapy, hypnotherapy, graphic imagery sessions, and other ways to help patients manage a treatment day.

The Laura Rosenberg Procedure Suite is situated between the Pediatric Day Hospital and the inpatient units. All invasive procedures, such as bone marrow aspirates or lumbar punctures, are performed under fast-acting, general anesthesia, providing a pain-free experience for all patients. The suite also includes an adjacent recovery area.
