Description:

This is an intensive 4 week experience designed to introduce the motivated student with an interest in surgery to the rapidly expanding field of thoracic surgery. The student will be exposed to all facets of thoracic surgical oncology through a structured 4 week curriculum under the guidance of a dedicated preceptor. Over the course of the month, the student will become acquainted with the contemporary management of diseases of the lung, esophagus, mediastinum, airway and chest wall. The student will be an integral part of the Thoracic Surgery team. Hands-on experience is emphasized, and responsibility is afforded commensurate with the individual's abilities and experience. The didactic curriculum is supplemented by a number of service-sponsored conferences, and clinical decision-making is further highlighted through weekly clinics. Familiarity with thoracic anatomy and the techniques of bronchoscopy, endoscopy, tube thoracostomy, thoracotomy and other procedures is gained through assistance with procedures in the OR and bedside. Individuals with an interest in surgery and diseases of the chest will be exposed to one of the largest volumes of thoracic disease and enjoy an unparalleled educational experience.
