Description:

This elective is designed to give students an introduction to the practical problems in general hematology with particular reference to the hematological problems associated with malignancy. Under the supervision of attending physicians and hematology-oncology fellows, students will function as part of a consultative team participating in hematological diagnosis and therapy. Students are expected to gain proficiency in case presentations and such practical areas as the interpretation of peripheral blood smears and bone marrow aspirates. Students will have an opportunity to observe and, if time permits, perform basic laboratory tests in hemostasis and blood banking. Part of the module may be spent on the Leukemia or Lymphoma Services, introducing students to the more specialized areas of hematological malignancies. Students will work in the Hematology and/or Lymphoma Clinics (about 150 patients per week are seen) gaining experience in ambulatory care and participate in daily Attending and Bone Marrow Rounds, as well as weekly General Hematology, Leukemia, and Lymphoma Conferences.
