Description:

This elective offers an introduction to pulmonary medicine and is a clinical experience. The majority of the rotation is spent on the inpatient consult service but the student also has the opportunity to participate in the outpatient clinics. Exposure to ICU patients is included. The spectrum of disease includes: pulmonary infections, interstitial lung disease in the immunocompetent and immunocompromised host, obstructive lung disease, pulmonary embolic disease, and acute and chronic respiratory failure, malignancy both primary lung and metastatic disease and its complications and management, and pre-operative pulmonary assessment and perioperative care. The student is expected to participate on floor rounds and be active in the outpatient clinic setting and attending all pulmonary conferences which occur several times a week and include: radiology conference, pathology conference, didactic conferences and clinical case presentations.
