Research Interests
Dr. Zuccotti joined the MSKCC faculty full-time in 2001 after spending two years in the Infectious Disease Division of New York Presbyterian Hospital. Her clinical interests focus on housestaff and fellow education and she is the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. She sees both inpatient and outpatient general infectious disease consultations and has a special interest in travel health. She has held the position of Clinical Director at the International Health Care Service at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and continues to see pre- and post-travel consultations on a weekly basis.
Dr. Zuccotti's research interests relate to hospital epidemiology, infection control and antibiotic utilization. Using the techniques of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), plasmid profiling and PCR she has studied the molecular epidemiology of nosocomial Acinetobacter anitratus infection. In addition, she has supervised the evaluation of a pseudo-outbreak of multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis and investigated the risk factors for infection with other drug-resistant organisms, in particular Klebsiella pneumoniae. More recently, she is participating in ongoing projects using PFGE to monitor nosocomial transmission of VRE and MRSA.
In conjunction with the Pharmacy Division at New York Presbyterian Hospital, she was instrumental in the development of an antibacterial restriction program that used both Infectious Disease fellows and hospital pharmacists to standardize antibacterial utilization. Her research related to antibiotic control has included projects investigating the pharmacoeconomics of antibacterial utilization and the effects on microbial resistance, pathogen prevalence and health care cost. She was a co-investigator on a two-year project examining the economic consequences of antibacterial resistance in community-acquired pneumonia and has served as the infectious disease consultant for a project funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) evaluating integrated delivery systems and clinical preparedness for bioterrorist events.
In addition to her activities in the Division, Dr. Zuccotti is the Deputy Editor at The Medical Letter. As Deputy Editor, she interacts with experts from all fields of medicine at institutions around the globe. She writes reviews and edits articles for the publication on Infectious Diseases and many other branches of medicine. She is also a Contributing Editor at the Journal of The American Medical Association, where she coordinates reviews and publication of Infectious Disease submissions.
