Summary of Invention

Cellular factors that bind to and regulate messenger RNA stability are important players in post-transcriptional control of gene expression. The HuR protein is one such factor; it binds to the 3'-untranslated region, specifically enhancing the stability or increasing the rate of turnover of mRNAs that encode oncogene products, cytokines, and growth factors.

Advantages

This invention contains the first available monoclonal antibody that recognizes the HuR protein and provides a critical reagent for investigation of HuR mechanism of action and function in regulation of RNA stability. The antibody detects human, mouse, rat, xenopus, and avian HuR. Assays, such as western blotting, immunocytochemistry, immunoprecipitation, and gel shift analysis, are made possible by these monoclonal antibodies.
