Mike's Story

Mike DeBenedictis

After a prolonged period of inconclusive tests, Michael DeBenedictis, a 65-year-old retired elementary school teacher, was finally diagnosed with the prostate cancer that he had suspected all along. This is his story of persistence and determination.

I started to develop symptoms in 1997 when I was 48 years old. At the time, I was traveling internationally as a project manager for PepsiCo and I thought that might explain some of my symptoms. Wanting to get to the bottom of it, I went to my primary care physician in New Jersey, who found nothing.

It all began in April 2003, when I went in for my semi-annual physical. My internist noticed something unusual during the routine digital rectal exam. He said, "I don't think it's anything, but let's get you checked, just to make sure."
