Memorial Sloan-Kettering President Harold Varmus was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in May. The Royal Society is the United Kingdom's national academy of science, with a Fellowship composed of distinguished scientists from the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth countries, and the Republic of Ireland. In addition, the Royal Society elects up to six Foreign Members each year. Fellows and Foreign Members are elected for their contributions to science, both in fundamental research and also in leading and directing the scientific enterprise in research institutions and industry. All Fellows, including Foreign Members, have lifetime appointments and are elected through a rigorous peer-review process, culminating in a vote by existing Fellows.
