This is a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited program in tumor pathology during which fellows are actively engaged in the examination of anatomic pathology material submitted to the Department of Pathology under the supervision of the attending staff.

The material comprises over 46,000 surgical specimens (including 16,000 departmental consults, 3,000 personal consults, and 350 electron microscopy specimens), and 45 autopsies per year.

Dr. Klimstra and Fellows

The educational program's philosophy involves direct handling of large volumes of interesting and complicated cases by the fellows. Rotations are organized by subspecialty, including breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, thoracic, hematopathology, head and neck, soft tissue, bone, dermatopathology, neuropathology, and intraoperative consultations (frozen sections). An elective period is also provided. Participation in research projects by the fellows is encouraged.

Eligibility

The fellowship is available to individuals who have completed training in pathology or dermatology in an ACGME-accredited residency program. Board-eligibility in either AP, AP/CP or Dermatology is required by the beginning of the fellowship in Dermatopathology.

All qualified applicants are welcome, but preference will be given to those committed to an academic career in Pathology. A definite attempt will be made to identify individuals interested in combining two pathology fellowships offered at Memorial Sloan-Kettering under the assumption that this experience should provide them with a strong basis for a successful career in Academic Pathology.

Therefore, preference for the subspecialty fellowships and Molecular Pathology fellowships will be given to those who have completed the Oncologic Pathology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering or those who have had an analogous experience in a similar institution.

Early application is encouraged.
