The Critical Care Medicine Service in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine offers one-year and two-year fellowships in Critical Care Medicine, leading to eligibility for Subspecialty Board Examination in Critical Care. The program is open to physicians who are board eligible or certified in internal medicine or an internal medicine subspecialty.

Under the supervision of full-time, multidisciplinary critical care attendings, fellows will be fully responsible for the management of critically ill patients. Fellows will oversee patients in the 'closed' Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit of Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases and will consult and assist with the management of all unstable patients within the facility. Fellows are expected to lead a diverse housestaff including anesthesiology and internal medicine residents in the ICU. Additionally, fellows rotate through the operating room to gain expertise in airway management and will be exposed to echocardiography and ultrasonography as they pertain to the critically ill patient. Electives are also available in renal replacement therapy and total parenteral nutrition. Fellows also participate in database design, informatics, and ICU administration.

To complete the fellows' exposure to critically ill and injured patients, additional time is spent at other institutions in New York City. At these facilities, fellows may be assigned to the Trauma-Surgical Unit (New York University-Bellevue Hospital Center), Cardiothoracic and Neurosurgical Units (New York-Presbyterian Hospital), or General Medical Intensive and Coronary Care Units (New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens). The fellowship provides opportunities for research projects and for development of administrative skills.
