The Clinical Nutrition section of the Gastroenterology and Nutrition Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center offers a one-year Nutrition Fellowship Training Program that combines an outstanding experience in patient care and education with clinical research opportunities. The Clinical Nutrition Service consults on and manages patients with a full spectrum of nutrition-related disorders. Fellows work as members of a dedicated nutrition support team where they will learn how to conduct a proper nutrition assessment, develop a therapeutic plan, and monitor patients receiving specialized nutrition support. Fellows will evaluate and manage patients receiving oral dietary therapy, enteral nutrition, and parenteral nutrition.
We are a very active service; each year we see close to 500 inpatient consults, and we provide over 6,500 inpatient nutrition treatment days. Our outpatient service is equally busy. Each year, we manage over 400 patients receiving specialized nutrition support at home, including approximately 50 patients who receive home parenteral nutrition.
In addition to their responsibility for clinical work, the fellows will be responsible for teaching other members of the nutrition support team, including residents, dietitians, pharmacists, and nurses. The section has a weekly conference in which there are presentations of various clinical problems, as well as discussions on topics in basic and clinical nutrition. Fellows will also attend the weekly GI clinical conference and journal club.
There is ample opportunity to conduct clinical research, and it is strongly encouraged. We are actively studying the role of diet in carcinogenesis. In addition, we continue to study the role of specialized nutrition support in patients with cancer or with long-term gastrointestinal dysfunction as a result of antineoplastic therapy. Our fellows have published their work in peer-reviewed journals. They have also presented their findings at national and international meetings.
