The Department of Surgery offers a two-year surgical oncology fellowship to fully trained general surgeons who desire further experience in surgical oncology.

The first year of the fellowship is comprised of a core rotation schedule that provides experience with several different services. These include the Breast, Colorectal, Hepatobiliary, Head and Neck, and Thoracic Services for one to two months each; the Gastric and Mixed Tumor Service for three to four months; the Gynecology Service for one month; and one to two months of electives. The individual's goals and requirements will determine the second year of the fellowship. During this year, the fellow will rotate on the Gastric and Mixed Tumor Services, as well as on the Hepatobiliary Services for an additional five months. Within the remaining months, the fellow may elect further clinical rotations and/or participate in basic or clinical investigations under the guidance of senior attending preceptors. Each fellow will perform approximately 600 procedures during the two-year experience.

Through the course of the two-year program, the fellows will also rotate through pathology (one month), radiation oncology (one month), medical oncology (one month), and may take elective rotations in GI endoscopy (one to three months).

The surgical conferences of the Department include a core course in surgical oncology given each summer, weekly Grand Rounds, Chairman's Conference, and a monthly Journal Club where fellows debate controversial issues. There is also weekly lecture series on surgical oncology-related topics, weekly service discussions, and laboratory conferences. Fellows actively teach residents on rounds and in a weekly fellow-run conference. They will also have access to all conferences within the Center. There are approximately 50 formal conferences and five to ten cancer-related lectures each week.

Research interests are discussed with each fellow at the beginning of the two-year program. It is hoped that background reading and preparation will lead to clinical research projects in the first year, as well as provide a productive six- to eight-month research program in the second year. Active research programs exist within the department in the areas of metabolism, nutrition, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, molecular biology, and genetics. Existing laboratory funding and grants will financially support laboratory research.

Approximately 85 percent of the graduates assume a full-time appointment in academic surgery. It is the objective of the program to meet the fellows' specific needs. There is a significant opportunity to become well-trained in the broad field of Surgical Oncology, as well as to become a leader in the multidisciplinary care of the cancer patient.

Fellows are responsible for preoperative and postoperative patient care, and they will perform surgical procedures under the direction of an attending surgeon. Fellows are also not only asked to help supervise and instruct residents and medical students, but they are also requested to participate in outpatient clinics, rounds, lectures, seminars, the journal club, and research conferences.
