The Head and Neck Service of the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center offers a two- to two-and-one-half-year senior fellowship in head and neck oncologic surgery. The American Head and Neck Society-sponsored Joint Training Council for Approval of Advanced Training in Head and Neck Oncologic gives approval for the fellowship.

The program is designed to offer the candidate a comprehensive training program in clinical head and neck oncology and basic research in order to prepare the individual for an academic career in this field. The clinical rotation is for a period of 12 months, and depending upon individual interest and research projects, the research rotation may vary from six months to 18 months. In addition to 12 months of clinical rotation in surgery, each candidate may dedicate time to the Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, and Pathology Services. An elective period of up to three months is available for a fellow to gain additional experience with any particular subject.

Fellows are responsible for preoperative and postoperative patient care, and they will be involved in surgical operations under the attending surgeon's direction. Fellows are also asked to help supervise and instruct residents on the Head and Neck Service, as well as participate in outpatient clinics, rounds, lectures, seminars, Journal Club, and research conferences.
