Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center offers fellowships in neurosurgical oncology. The fellowships consist of one clinical year, as well as a second optional year for further clinical work and/or research.
The fellowship program is designed within a multidisciplinary setting to provide the education and training necessary for the practice of neurosurgical oncology. The neurology house staff, with close neurosurgical fellow supervision, admits and manages the neurosurgical patients.
The fellows are responsible for preoperative and postoperative patient care, and they will perform surgical procedures at a minimum of two full operating days per week under the direction of an attending surgeon. During the nonoperating days, the fellows will share the responsibility of covering the weekly outpatient clinic, hospital consultations, and supervising and instructing residents and medical students. Call schedule is every third night and weekend.
There are daily neuroradiology rounds and weekly combined clinical conferences with neurology, orthopedics, radiation therapy, and neuropathology. In addition, there is a large choice of weekly training conferences, seminars, and treatment planning conferences available; fellows are encouraged to participate. In addition to the weekly conferences, several courses are offered annually. These courses include general and surgical oncology, biostatistics, computer courses, and basic research techniques.
During the clinical year, fellows are encouraged to participate in clinical research projects; they receive strong support in this endeavor. In the second year, laboratory research is offered to interested candidates in the Brain Tumor Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
The broad spectrum of oncological diseases seen at Memorial Sloan-Kettering makes the fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology at MSKCC unique. After completing the fellowship, fellows will possess a thorough understanding of both general and neurological oncology. They will not only participate in a large number of surgical procedures on brain and spine tumors, but they will also experience postoperative management.
