The Colorectal Clinical Research Fellowship is a one-year position that consists of clinical research, in addition to an in-depth exposure to the diagnostic workup and care of colorectal cancer patients. Each week, the fellow will spend two-and-a-half days in the clinic under the attending surgeon's supervision. The clinical focus will be on the evaluation and treatment planning for colorectal cancer patients with a strong emphasis on endorectal ultrasound imaging and physiologic testing in our Anorectal Diagnostic Center. During the course of this one-year experience, the fellow will develop proficiency in the use these modalities. Clinical research projects will focus on the assessment of the role of 3-D imaging and color flow doppler during conventional endorectal ultrasound imaging, prospective bowel functional analysis after rectal cancer treatment, and the feasibility of anal sphincter reconstruction following AP resection. The colorectal research fellow will participate fully in all academic activities within the Department of Surgery. Surgical conferences include a core course in surgical oncology given each summer, weekly grand rounds, a weekly Chairman's conference, and a weekly Colorectal Disease Management conference that includes a Journal Club format each month. The colorectal research fellow is expected to not only complete at least two clinical research projects during the course of the academic year to be submitted for publication, but he/she should also complete at least one presentation at a national meeting. In addition, the fellow will be expected to co-author at least one book chapter.
