The Department of Surgery offers a one-year International Surgical Oncology Fellowship to fully trained surgeons from outside the United States who desire further experience in surgical oncology.

The one-year fellowship is comprised of a rotation schedule providing exposure to the Breast Service, Colorectal Service, Gastric and Mixed Tumor Service, Hepatobiliary Service, Head and Neck Service, Thoracic Service, and one to two months of electives in the area of Chemotherapy and/or Pathology and/or Radiation Therapy. The international fellow will be responsible for preoperative and postoperative patient care, and he/she will perform operations under the attending surgeon's supervision. The international fellow will also gain experience in the surgical clinics, as well as attend and arrange rounds, conferences, lectures, and seminars.

Eligibility

Candidates must be graduates of a recognized foreign medical school and have completed a general surgery residency training program in their country. The candidate must also be interested and committed to expanding his/her expertise in surgical oncology.

The candidate must have passed the USMLE examinations or any equivalent predecessor or successor examination and hold a valid ECFMG certificate. Selected candidates must qualify for and obtain a limited permit to practice medicine from the New York State Education Department, in accordance with its requirements.

In addition, the candidate must certify intent to return to his/her home country upon completion of training.

How To Apply

Completed applications should be returned by May 31 of the year prior to the July 1 start date. Three letters of recommendation will be required, one from the medical school and two other letters from faculty members of the training program. Interviews for selected candidates will be held in October of the preceding year. The selection will be made by November 1.
