The New York-Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center jointly offer an ACGME-accredited two-year training program in Medical Genetics. The program is designed to train physicians to diagnose, manage, and counsel patients with genetic disorders. There is also an opportunity for special focus on inherited predisposition to cancer. Both NYPH and Memorial Sloan-Kettering are affiliated with the Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University. The Division of Human Genetics at NYPH performs adult, pediatric, and prenatal consultations for a full range of inherited disorders and chromosomal abnormalities. Memorial Sloan-Kettering is a comprehensive cancer center consisting of Memorial Hospital and the Sloan-Kettering Institute. The Clinical Genetics Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering sees a high volume of patients who have or may have an inherited predisposition to cancer.
This joint training program includes rotations at two clinical cytogenetics laboratories, three clinical molecular genetics laboratories, and one clinical biochemical genetics laboratory. At NYPH, research interests relevant to Medical Genetics include clinical genetics, dysmorphology, metabolic diseases, and prenatal diagnosis. At Memorial Sloan-Kettering, research relevant to Medical Genetics is active in four major areas: oncogenesis, genetic susceptibility to cancer, animal modes of human cancer, and gene transfer for gene therapy.
