The Gastrointestinal Oncology Fellowship Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is an ACGME-recognized, one- to two-year program designed to prepare physicians for academic careers in gastrointestinal oncology, with an emphasis on training as a clinical investigator.

The fellowship provides training in inpatient and outpatient gastrointestinal oncology, with specific focus on the different subspecialties within Gastrointestinal Oncology, as well as exposure to the different disciplines that relate to gastrointestinal oncology. These include surgery, radiation oncology, and pathology rotations.

Fellows will spend time in multiple disease-oriented outpatient clinics, gaining experience in the different gastrointestinal malignancies: esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, biliary, hepatocellular, colon, rectal, and anal cancers.

Fellows will also have opportunities to participate in ongoing research projects or initiate an independent project. This process will be helped by the assigning of a mentor throughout the fellowship, who will ensure that the objectives of the fellow are met for the training year.

The program includes a wide variety of conferences that complement the clinical aspects. These are based on a disease management concept and will group physicians from different specialties who treat the disease in question. In addition to these patient-based conferences, a weekly gastrointestinal oncology research meeting is held.
