The housing assignment process begins with the submission of a written request by your Sponsor or Department Chairman. The request should be submitted to the Housing Office as far in advance as possible. Given the great demand for housing accommodations, we suggest that this request be made about nine months to one year in advance of your actual arrival. Assignments are made based on the following criteria: institutional priorities, application date, apartment type, affordability, family size, and overall apartment availabilities. When you receive your apartment assignment, the Housing Office will provide you with information about your apartment and building, and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about your move.
In order to provide housing for as many new fellows as possible, there is a three-year limit on occupancy of research fellow housing. Should your training experience require more than three years, we expect you to find independent housing by the end of your third year. We realize that this may cause you some inconvenience; however, compliance with this policy is essential if the Center is to provide others with the same opportunities you received. Requests for extensions are reviewed by senior administration. Please be assured that should the need to relocate arise, we will make referrals to real estate brokers who have agreements with the Center to assist fellows in finding suitable housing. Limited housing extensions are granted for extenuating circumstances relating to childcare or schooling matters, medical conditions, or the need to closely match housing occupancy with the start date of your next position.

Center-owned buildings have live-in superintendents who act as property caretakers. They perform all cleaning and maintenance tasks. Should you have a maintenance problem, please feel free to contact the Housing Office, or ask your superintendent for assistance. Your building superintendent will also be able to answer specific questions you may have regarding your apartment or building. The Housing Department has a limited number of support staff such as mechanical, cleaning, painting, and doorman personnel. Available services vary depending on the building, so please confirm your building's services with the Housing Office upon your assignment.
In addition to superintendent services, all Memorial Sloan-Kettering residential buildings maintain 24-hour coverage for off-hour emergencies in the form of on-call maintenance personnel.
