Heather

Heather

Heather Buck was nearing her twelfth birthday in 1988 when her life took a traumatic turn. After experiencing excruciating pain in her right hip, she was sent to the hospital for x-rays by her pediatrician. The x-rays were inconclusive, but the blood tests and bone marrow examination that followed left no doubt -- Heather had chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), a form of cancer in which a patient's white blood cells multiply out of control.

I have been privileged to know Heather and her family for almost 20 years. Heather spans my career in oncology, and her treatment course provides a perfect template to describe the remarkable changes in the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) over the past 20 years.
