Pediatric Patient Story - Heather Buck
Heather Buck was nearing her twelfth birthday in 1988 when her life took a traumatic turn. After experiencing excruciating pain in her right hip, her pediatrician sent her to the hospital for x-rays. The x-rays were inconclusive, but the blood tests and bone marrow examination that followed left no doubt -- Heather had chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), a form of cancer in which a patient's white blood cells multiply out of control.
