New Prediction Tool for Prostate Cancer

Prostate Nomogram
Dealing with a diagnosis of prostate cancer is difficult enough, but having to select from a host of treatment choices, each with its own relative advantages and disadvantages, can be bewildering. To help men with this dilemma, physicians and statisticians from Memorial Sloan-Kettering, along with colleagues from the Cleveland Clinic, have created a newly revised and expanded prediction tool to help patients with prostate cancer decide which treatment approach will provide them with the greatest benefit.

Genes Set Scene for Metastasis

Biologists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering have identified a set of genes expressed in human breast cancer cells that work together to remodel the network of blood vessels at the site of the primary tumor. These genes were also found to promote the spread of breast cancer to the lungs. The study, conducted in mice and reported in this week's Nature, helps to explain how cancer metastasis can occur and highlights targets for therapeutic treatment.

Combination Therapy Found Less Effective Than Expected in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

An international Phase III clinical trial has demonstrated that the addition of bevacizumab (AvastinĀ®) to standard oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy improves progression-free survival for patients with previously untreated metastatic colorectal cancer, although the improvement was more modest than had been expected.
