Increasing minority participation in clinical trials is a national issue and a priority area of concern for this institution. Overcoming cultural and institutional barriers to the participation of minority patients in clinical trials remains a central focus for several faculty members.

Drs. Rapkin and Massie are working with hospitals, health providers, and community organizations to develop a program of breast cancer awareness targeted to providing education to promote cancer detection among medically underserved women of color. In addition, Dr. Rapkin is collaborating on research addressing individual, family and health services barriers to informed consent for research participation as well as the development and evaluation of innovative technologies for cancer education and communication to traditionally underserved communities. Dr. Rapkin has several community outreach projects focusing on reducing disparities in cancer and HIV. Dr. Rapkin is also co-heading a collaborative research partnership with City College of the City University of New York (CCNY).
