Dr. Weiss' research focuses on identifying ways to strengthen academic-community health partnerships, improving the dissemination of cancer information and care delivery through these partnerships, and demonstrating the value of community involvement in addressing complex health problems. She has developed new methodologies to study and evaluate the functioning of partnerships, and has translated research findings into practical tools that can help partnerships achieve their goals. Dr. Weiss is Co-investigator and Project Director of a new NCI-sponsored participatory research study (B. Rapkin, PI) that is using the Queens Borough Public Library system and community-based coalitions to foster access to cancer detection and preventive care in medically underserved communities. She is also studying and evaluating an NIH-funded partnership between the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, African-American and Latino teenagers, and CBOs in the Bronx, New York, which is working to address local health disparities among teens. Finally, Dr. Weiss is initiating a research project at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center that will examine physician and institutional barriers to the recruitment of minority patients to cancer treatment trials, and will identify internal and external opportunities for overcoming these barriers.
