For many cancer patients, treatment requires a hospital stay.
Memorial Hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering's main hospital
building, is located on the Upper Eastside of Manhattan at 1275 York
Avenue between 67th and 68th Streets. There are 437 patient beds
at Memorial Hospital.
We have a special approach to hospitalized care. Our goal is to
prepare patients for an early and confident return home. There are
many aspects of what we do that help patients heal and come to be
ready to leave the hospital.
Organization by Cancer Type
Patients with the same or similar types of cancer are located
together, where physicians, nurses and other patient-care team
members have special expertise and training in the medical and
surgical aspects of those particular cancers. This arrangement
combines the benefits of highly skilled professional care with
unique sensitivity to the needs of patients and caregivers. An
important added benefit is that patients with shared experiences can
often support each other in very meaningful ways. Special units are
available for patients who require acute neurological care or
general intensive care, and for those receiving bone marrow
transplants.
Responsiveness to Patients' Needs
Memorial Sloan-Kettering's system of specialization and expertise
provides a solid foundation for organization and management. The
physician and nurse leaders of each unit have decision-making
ability, which enables them to respond quickly to patients' needs as
they arise.
Home-Like Environment
Special attention is paid to making patients and their families
feel comfortable during their hospital stay.
