AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The virus attacks and breaks down the immune system, the body's line of defense against infections and disease. As these defenses weaken, people with AIDS can develop one or more of a group of very serious infections and cancers. Certain cancer types, such as Kaposi sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, are more likely to occur in people infected with HIV.

If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with an AIDS-associated cancer, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is ready to help. Our experienced team of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who treat these cancers is dedicated to providing the highest-quality screening, treatment, and care for our patients. Patients also have access to innovative therapies through our clinical trials.

  • AIDS-Associated Kaposi's Sarcoma
Kaposi's sarcoma, a cancer that can give rise to lesions on the skin, mucous membranes, and gastrointestinal tract, was one of the first recognized signs of HIV infection. This type of cancer is more than 3000 times more common among people infected with HIV than among those without the virus.
  • AIDS-Associated Lymphomas
Although most cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are not AIDS-related, this type of cancer is nearly 20 to 50 times more common among people infected with HIV than among those without the virus.
  • Clinical Trials
A listing of clinical trials for AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma offered through the AIDS Malignancy Consortium.
  • Support Services
Memorial Sloan-Kettering offers a wide range of programs to help patients manage some of the other issues that may arise as a result of a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up treatment.
