Approximately 30% of the adult population is obese, with obesity known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and a number of cancers. The relationship of overweight to cancer incidence and mortality, however, is less clear. One mechanism through which adiposity is thought to influence cancer risk is through its interplay with hormones. As a way to understand the roles of obesity and hormones on risk of cancer, I have conducted a number of retrospective and prospective studies to examine these factors. At this seminar, I will present findings from studies of: 1) body mass index, weight change, and risk of cancer and all-cause mortality; 2) sex hormones and risk of prostate cancer; and 3) menstrual and reproductive risk factors for lung cancer.
