Nurse Practitioners Specialize in Survivorship Care

Survivor Clinics
There were approximately three million cancer survivors in the US in 1971. Today, that figure has grown to nearly 12 million. While most cancer survivors will lead healthy, active lives, some may develop problems related to their cancer and its treatment. To help address these issues in the pediatric population, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has had a pediatric long-term follow-up clinic for nearly two decades. In 2005, a new care model for survivors of adult-onset cancers was developed in which specially trained nurse practitioners provide follow-up care with a focus on both the medical and psychosocial issues related to an individual's cancer and its treatment.

Updated Melanoma Overview

Melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer that begins in skin cells called melanocytes, which produce the pigment melanin. While not as common as two other major types of skin cancer (basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma), as with most cancers, it is more likely to spread if not detected and treated early. In this section, you can find information about our expertise in treating patients with melanoma, our services, and our research.

Genetic Information Becomes a Vital Part of Clinical Practice

As the genetics revolution continues to flourish at centers like Memorial Sloan-Kettering, discoveries made in the laboratory are increasingly producing real-world benefits for cancer patients.

Genetic Counselors Help Patients Negotiate Difficult Path

For most people, confronting the results of a genetic test can be stressful, if not overwhelming. In an effort to provide support and guidance in interpreting the test results, Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Clinical Genetics Service has a staff of genetic counselors who offer information and education about genetic risk factors for families who have chosen to be tested.

Prostate Cancer Patient Story

In 2004, at the age of 69, Hans A. Schicht, a retired business owner, was the picture of perfect health, playing in a competitive tennis league and swimming four times a week. A diagnosis of prostate cancer threatened to change this picture dramatically.

Staff Profile

Cancer Biologist Andrea Ventura

Cancer biologist Andrea Ventura became fascinated with the machinery of genetics as a student in Italy and focused on cancer genes during postdoctoral work at MIT. Now at Sloan-Kettering Institute, he devotes his research to the nascent field of microRNA expression, seeking to understand how these small particles act on genes to promote or suppress cancer.
