If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with thymoma, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is ready to help. Our team of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who treat thymoma are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for men and women with this disease.

In this section, you can find information about our expertise in treating patients with thymoma, the services we offer patients with this condition, and research under way at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

  • Our Approach & Treatment Team
Patients with thymoma, thymic carcinoma, and other tumors of the chest in the area between the lungs (known as the mediastinum) get the best care when surgeons, oncologists, and radiation oncologists collaborate in their treatment.
  • Overview
Tumors in this organ -- thymoma and thymic carcinoma -- are thought to develop in epithelial cells, the cells that line the thymus. About 90 percent of tumors of the thymus are thymomas.
  • Symptoms & Diagnosis
Many thymomas do not cause symptoms and are found during testing for other conditions. If thymoma is suspected, your doctor will first perform a number of tests that together show the size, shape, and location of the tumor, and whether and where the disease has spread outside the thymus.
  • Treatment
Treatment for thymoma and thymic carcinoma depends on the stage of the disease and the patient's overall health. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
  • Our Clinical Trials
Here you can find a continually updated listing of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's current clinical trials for thymoma.
  • Survivorship & Support
Overall survival after treatment for thymoma is quite good. Continued follow-up is very important to avoid recurrence.
