For many teenagers, looking good is an essential part of their lives — a fact no less true for teens with cancer. Thanks to the Look Good…Feel Better for Teens program, teens who were treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering recently received some helpful, easy-to-use tips on how to look their best while dealing with the side effects of their treatment.
Created in 1989 as a partnership among the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association Foundation; the American Cancer Society; and the National Cosmetology Association, the original Look Good…Feel Better program was designed to help adult women cope with the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy or radiation. And Look Good…Feel Better for Teens was created in 1996 for both young men and women between the ages of 13 and 17.
In early March, the group of MSKCC teens participated in a fun, information-filled session with cosmetologist Evelyn Brown and Look Good…Feel Better staff member Marcella Crawford. It was a great opportunity for the teens to learn more about makeup, skin care, and ways to deal creatively with hair loss, as well as to talk about nutrition, exercise, fitness, and teenage social-life issues.
