In his welcoming remarks at the 2009 Samuel and May Rudin Awards for Excellence in Nursing ceremony, Memorial Hospital Physician-in-Chief Robert E. Wittes hailed the event as not only a recognition of a few individuals, but "a celebration of all of you and the outstanding nature of nursing at Memorial Hospital."

The ceremony, held on the morning of May 6 in the Rockefeller Research Laboratories Auditorium, recognized five Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center nurses and a support staff member for exemplary service in patient care. The award winners were nominated by fellow nurses, administrators, physicians, and patients for providing excellent care and comfort.

Elizabeth Nelkin McCormick, Executive Director of Nursing, thanked the Rudin family and the Samuel and May Rudin Foundation for their continued support of the awards program and concluded with words of praise from a patient's family member: "The Center contains a spirit that will not be stilled and a voice that will not be silenced. All of your nurses comprise a cadre that encompasses the patients with the will to survive and prevail."
