A Return to Normal: The Collaborative Art and Science of Breast Reconstruction

To receive a diagnosis of cancer can be terrifying. Then to learn that the surgery required to remove the cancer will result in a life-altering physical disfigurement or a functional impairment, or both, can compound the devastation. However, in recent decades, with the increasing sophistication of microsurgical techniques, plastic and reconstructive surgeons have helped the majority of patients facing such crises to return to normal or near-normal lives, with often-remarkable cosmetic and functional results.

Study Examines Mastectomy and Breast-Conserving Surgery Rates

Concerns about the excessive use of mastectomy for patients with breast cancer have been raised for decades despite a marked increase in breast-conserving surgery in recent years. New data from an observational study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds many factors contribute to a woman's decision.

Investigational Treatment Shows Early Promise Against Metastatic Melanoma

Preliminary findings from a study led by Memorial Sloan-Kettering investigators have revealed rapid and dramatic shrinking of metastatic tumors in patients treated with a new compound that interrupts a tumor-growth pathway present in the majority of patients with melanoma.

Linking Histones and Cancer

Structural biologists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center are collaborating with biochemists and cell biologists at The Rockefeller University to study how cells read genetic instructions imprinted on histones, DNA's packaging proteins.

Peter T. Scardino, MD, Chair of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Department Surgery, was awarded the Barringer Medal from the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons for his distinguished contributions to urology.

Charles Sawyers Honored with 2009 Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center physician-scientist Charles L. Sawyers, MD, has been named a recipient of the 2009 Lasker~DeBakey Award for Clinical Medical Research for his part in advancing treatments for chronic myeloid leukemia.
