Steve Bertha is a consultant for the Office of Industrial Affairs. He served as the department's Associate Director from 2003 through 2008 and from 1997 through 2000.
Steve received his PhD degree in chemistry from Florida State University. He has earned honors and distinctions that include the Bronze Medal "Order of 27," awarded to him by the President of the Republic of Venezuela in 1982. His educational background includes research and development management training from the University of Bradford, in the United Kingdom.
Steve has more than 30 years of experience in technology management. From 2000 through 2003, he served as the executive director of the Hospital for Special Surgery's Technology Transfer Office. Previously, he directed the Intellectual Property Office of the University of Illinois at Chicago and served as associate director of Yale University's Office of Cooperative Research from 1988 through 1993.
Prior to his tenure in the academic technology transfer community, Steve served as president of Houston-based Quality Imports. Earlier, he was the president of the Heads of Research Institutes (six institutes) at Venezuela's Universidad Simón Bolívar from 1970 through 1986.
Steve is a member of the Licensing Executives Society and the Association of University Technology Managers.
