Alan's Story

Alan Stracke

It was the fall of 2006 and Alan Stracke, a 61-year-old sociology professor, had begun his 34th year of teaching at Champlain College, in Burlington, VT. Suddenly, halfway through the semester, he began feeling extremely fatigued and had difficulty breathing. Little did he know that this would lead to a diagnosis of T cell lymphoma and a stem cell transplant.

Nancie's Story

Nancie Simonet

There is never a good time for disease to strike. But for chef and restaurant owner Nancie Simonet, the phone call that woke her up before dawn one morning in January 2003 could not have come at a worse time. The call would eventually lead to a diagnosis of a blood disorder known as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and a life-saving stem cell transplant.
