Enrollment in clinical trials is always voluntary and is usually most opportune at the time of an individual's initial diagnosis, before the start of treatment.
Clinical trials -- also known as clinical studies or research protocols -- are conducted by doctors to test whether a new drug, a new prevention strategy, or a new screening test is safe and effective in people. Approximately 1,500 cancer clinical trials are currently active in the United States. Memorial Sloan-Kettering investigators conduct as many as 400 of those studies, ranging from small, short-term studies to large trials with thousands of patients in many institutions.
