Prostate surgeon Vincent Laudone of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center says that not all men with prostate cancer need aggressive treatment. Active surveillance, in which tumor progression is monitored with PSA tests, biopsies, and MRI scans, is often recommended for men with slow-growing tumors that are confined to the prostate. This approach can spare men from overtreatment that can lead to unpleasant side effects.
