Sergio Giralt, Chief of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, says that patients with bone marrow that is free of abnormal white blood cells may be candidates for autologous transplantation. In this procedure, a patient's own stem cells are collected and then transplanted back into him or her. This therapy is the most common transplant procedure for patients with myeloma.
