Most guidelines recommend annual PSA testing for men starting at age 50. Men at increased risk for prostate cancer may begin annual PSA testing earlier. A prostate biopsy, which is performed by a urologist, is usually recommended for men who have a rising or abnormally high PSA, says surgical oncologist Vincent Laudone of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Biopsy results such as PIN (prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia) and ASAP (atypical small acinar proliferation) may indicate cancer. PSA (prostate-specific antigen) tests may be performed after surgery to see if any prostate cancer cells remain in the body.
