Chemotherapy can lower the amount of estrogen circulating in the body, which in turn may cause vaginal dryness. This dryness can make intercourse uncomfortable.

Self-Care Measures:

  • Use water-based vaginal lubricants (e.g., Astroglide®, K-Y Jelly®, Replens®).
  • Extend foreplay to increase arousal before intercourse.
  • Let your partner know that vaginal dryness is a side effect of chemotherapy and not a lack of desire.
  • Establish a position in which you are most comfortable.
  • Ask your nurse about exercises to relax the vaginal muscles.
