Also Known As: VP-16, Vepesid®
Etoposide prevents cancer cells from growing by interfering with DNA, the genetic material in cells.
How It Is Given:
Orally (by mouth).
Immediate Side Effects (beginning within 24 hours):
- Mild nausea may develop.
- Allergic reactions may occur, but they are rare.
Early side Effects (beginning within one week):
- Mouth sores may develop.
- A mild loss of appetite may occur.
Late Side Effects (beginning after one week):
- A temporary decrease in blood cell counts - white blood cells and platelets - may occur within one to two weeks after treatment.
- Hair loss may occur within two to three weeks after each treatment.
- Numbness and tingling in hands and feet may occur after several treatments, but they are uncommon.
Special Points:
- Take etoposide at least two hours after or one hour before eating or drinking.
- Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen (e.g., Motrin®, Advil®), products containing them or similar products unless your doctor prescribes them.
- Tell your doctor or nurse if you are taking any other medications, including over-the-counter preparations that do not require a prescription, herbal remedies, vitamins, or dietary supplements. Some of these may interfere with your chemotherapy.
Call Your Doctor or Nurse If You:
- Have a fever of 100.5°F (38°C) or higher.
- Have excessive vomiting and are unable to eat or drink for 24 hours.
- Have black bowel movements, bruising, faint red rash, or any other signs of bleeding.
- Develop mouth sores that prevent you from eating or drinking.
- Have any questions or concerns.
- Have any unexpected, unexplained problems.
