Also Known As: Cytosar®, Cytosine Arabinoside, Ara-C

Cytarabine interferes with an enzyme that cancer cells need to live and grow.

How It Is Given:

Intravenously (by vein)

Immediate Side Effects (beginning within 24 hours):

  • Mild nausea or vomiting can begin 6 to 12 hours after receiving the drug.
  • Mild fever can occur for 24 hours after receiving the drug.

Late Side Effects (beginning after one week):

  • A temporary decrease in blood cells (white blood cells and platelets) can occur within one to two weeks after treatment.
  • Mouth sores can develop seven to ten days after treatment.
  • Temporary thinning or loss of hair can occur several weeks after each treatment.

Special Points:

  • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen (e.g., Motrin®, Advil®), or products containing them unless your doctor prescribes them.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you are taking any other medications, including over-the-counter preparations that do not require a prescription, herbal remedies, vitamins, or dietary supplements. Some of these may interfere with your chemotherapy.

Call Your Doctor or Nurse If You:

  • Have nausea or vomiting and are unable to eat or drink for more than 24 hours after receiving the drug.
  • Have a fever of 100.5° F (38º C) or higher.
  • Have black bowel movements, bruising, a faint red rash, or any other signs of bleeding.
  • Develop mouth sores.
  • Have any unexpected or unexplained problems.
  • Have any questions or concerns.
