Also Known As: Agrylin
Anagrelide is used to decrease the number of platelets in the blood.
How It Is Given:
Orally, by mouth, with or without food
Immediate Side Effects (beginning within 24 hours):
- Headache
- Tiredness or fatigue
- Dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
Early Side Effects (beginning within seven days):
- Swelling of the hands and feet
- Drowsiness
- Palpitation
- Gas
Late Side Effects (beginning after seven days):
- Increased risk of sunburn. Use a Sunblock with an SPF of 15 or higher.
- Hair loss (rare).
Special Points:
- Tell your doctor or nurse if you have heart disease or kidney or liver problems.
- Speak with your doctor before you start taking anagrelide if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. This drug can harm an unborn baby. You must use effective contraception during your treatment.
- Tell your doctor or nurse if you are taking any other medications, including over-the-counter preparations that do not require a prescription, herbal remedies, vitamins, or dietary supplements.
Some of these may interfere with anagrelide.
- You will have blood tests routinely to check your response to this treatment.
- If you forget to take a dose of anagrelide, take the missed dose as soon as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and keep taking the medicine at your usual schedule. Do not double your dose.
- Store the capsules away fro light, at 59° F to 77° F (15° to 25°).
Call Your Doctor or Nurse If You Have:
- A rapid and forceful heartbeat.
- Any other sign of a heart problem (e.g., pain or pressure in the chest, jaw, neck, back, or arms).
- Any black bowel movement, bruising, faint red rash, or any other signs of bleeding.
- Pain in the chest or stomach.
- Any unexpected or unexplained problems.
- Any questions or concerns.
