Gemtuzumab is an anti-CD33 monoclonal antibody. At present, we do not understand exactly how it works against leukemic cells.

How It Is Given:

Intravenously (IV, by vein)

Side Effects:

(Common and potentially life threatening)

  • Low blood counts (white blood cells and platelets)

(Others)

  • Low blood pressure
  • Fatigue
  • Seizure (uncommon)
  • Nausea and vomiting (possible severe)
  • Changes in blood liver values (not permanent)
  • Shortness of breath (uncommon)
  • Pneumonia (uncommon)
  • Fever, chills, and rigors (common)

Special Points:

  • Check with your doctor before you have any dental work and use caution when brushing teeth and flossing to prevent bleeding.
  • Do not take part in contact sports while on this drug.
  • Take special care with anything that could accidentally cause a cut or bruise (shaving, cooking, gardening).

Call Your Doctor or Nurse If You Have:

  • Bleeding, bruising, or black tarry stools (call immediately).
  • Blood in the urine or stools or a pinpoint red rash on the skin (call immediately).
  • Any unexplained problems.
  • Any questions or concerns.
